The
Caribou
In
the epic story of the snowmobile, you can add the name of Eugène
Prevost,
founder
of Prevost Car (now Volvo). Never one to shy away from a challenge, he
created
the Caribou, intended for the development of the Far North, designed
primarily
for work. The initial request came from Wilfrid Grenier, owner of a
surveying
company. He had a contract with the Canadian government as a
cartographer
for the Far North. He had designed an inefficient model himself in 1949.
In
1950, he redesigned the entire design, and it was patented in 1953.
However,
he called upon Eugène Prévost and his expertise to greatly
improve the
product,
resulting in the new version being named Caribou with a much
lighter
engine. It used engines from the small Dyna-Panhard car, and the body was
made
of aluminum. The tracks were developed by him. According to my information,
22
units were produced at the Prevost workshop in Ste. Claire. According to
the
Prevost
family, only one example has been recorded as still in existence.
The
Prévost family acquired it from a collector in 2024.
It
is said that J.A. Bombardier was impressed by the quality of this machine
and
Mr.
Eugène Prévost's facilities at Ste. Claire during a brief
visit.
